While wearing my “work” hat over the years, I’ve found myself in situations that have reinforced important “life” lessons. In particular, to count on the fact that something will always go wrong. And, conversely, if I remain calm in the situation and flexible on my feet, hopefully a lot of things will go just right. How did I put this learning to the test at two recent shows? Let me tell you about all of my crazy adventures....

Last October, I was at a fundraiser for a local organization, Stepping Out for Breast Cancer, when a reporter from the Baltimore Sun introduced himself. He mentioned that he wanted to feature me in the Spring 2019 edition of Baltimore At Home Magazine, a subscriber insert in the Baltimore Sun. They were doing a “Made in Maryland” feature. It all started when I went out to get the mail and found a copy of “Looking Good” Magazine in the mailbox. Much to my surprise, the First Lady of Maryland, Yumi Hogan, was featured on the cover in a beautiful aqua dress and... one of my necklaces! The stranger thing was that I don't subscribe to the magazine, it was misdelivered from my neighbor. I decided to contact the First Lady's office and find out how and when she acquired the piece. What's new you ask? A group of local artists have just opened a new store called Local By Design. Where is it? Downtown Annapolis right on Main Street. What? Yes. Really. This is the reaction we've been getting. Local by Design is located at 109 Main Street, right next to the town favorite O'Brien's Oyster Bar. This is a great location and a very exciting endeavor for me. I do over 30 art shows per year and the number one question I get asked is, “Where's your shop?” I lower my head and say, “Well... This past weekend I was a corporate sponsor at the Annapolis Maritime Museum's Oyster Roast and Sock Burning! What a great event for a great cause. We burned our socks to celebrate the start of Spring, ate LOTS of oysters and heard some great music from Dan Haas and Them Eastport Oyster Boys! It was a chilly day but we still had a great turnout. My daughter even got her picture with Governor Hogan!
